Currency & Money

The Croatian Kuna is the currency of Croatia. It is subdivided into 100 lipa. The Kuna comes in dominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 as notes and 1, 2, 5 and 25 (25 Kn being largely commemorative) as coins. The Lipa comes in coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50.

Croatia is a member of the EU and the euro can be used to pay for accommodation (hotels and private accommodation), but if you want to replace it, it is best to do so in exchange office or bank.  Banks and post offices will also change money at about the same rate as exchange offices but their opening hours are shorter.

Bank Opening Hours:

Monday-Friday 08:00-19:00, Saturday 08:00 to 12:00.

Post and Telecommunications:

Post Offices are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays until 1 p.m. There are Post Offices in the larger cities which are open until 10 p.m. in the summer.

Credit cards:

Credit cards are used, though not universally accepted. Visa, Master card and Diners are accepted the most frequently; American Express is accepted less frequently. All stores and hotels accept credit cards and they are increasingly accepted in restaurants as well-at least the larger ones. If you’re dining at a small family inn or konoba off the tourist path you should bring cash just in case.
